Rachel was waiting for him in the hauler, so he only waved to other sponsors or owners he saw, when most race nights he would have stopped to talk. They needed to meet for an update on the embezzlement problem.

He had little to give her, and seeing her had its own rewards and tortures.

After the go-kart races and the kiss that followed, she’d been looking at him differently. Even at the Richmond race two weeks ago, when she’d had that smiling doctor in tow, her gaze had connected with his in an intimate way that hadn’t been there before.

Usually her intimate look was followed by a quick frown of confusion and possibly regret, but he’d been having that same reaction for weeks, so he at least welcomed the companionship.

She was his driver’s sister, he kept reminding himself. She was his business and marketing partner. She wasn’t a casual weekend fling. If they gave in to the desire humming between them, then there would be repercussions.

Not to mention she was seeing someone else. They had to work together and he had to maintain control of his company. If his father or grandmother learned of any weakness in his strategy or relationships, they might petition the board of directors for a change of leadership.

He couldn’t risk his lifelong dream, his legacy, of controlling HHI.

All these issues factored into a maelstrom of confusion and need, wonder and fear that seemingly had no end.

“Hey, Parker,” Jamie, the team car chief said, stopping him outside the hauler. “the car’s actually good, you know.”

Clearly, his troubles had shown too obviously on the outside. He was a legend at poker in some circles. He might have the sense to show it.

“The car’s good?” he asked, banking his personal issues.

“It’s rocket fast,” Jamie said.

The NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race taking place later that night didn’t count toward the championship points, but the payday more than made up for it. Money, plus pride and bragging rights, had the teams going all out for the Saturday-night crowd in Charlotte, which nearly every team called home. It was like winning the homecoming football game.

“Can’t wait to see it hit the track,” Parker said.

“Hey, a bunch of us are watching baseball tomorrow before the wedding. You know, kind of a bachelor party for Cade since we can’t really have the strippers-and-tequila shots thing tonight.”

And we can all thank God for that. “I’ll be there. In fact, why don’t we have the party in Cade’s suite at the hotel.” Which he’d already conveniently arranged in anticipation of some thrown-together gathering by the guys. “It has a full bar, and I can have the culinary staff make some snacks.”

“Awesome. I gotta get back to the garage, but, hey, you wanna put some money in the betting pool? I got some serious cash on the Yankees.”

“Sure. Count me in for a hundred.
